Getting your measurements correct before ordering is the most important step in the process. Your floor-to-floor height and well opening size measurements determine your staircase configuration.
Floor-to-floor height
Measure from finished floor to finished floor. At the top, do not measure to the ceiling. If your well opening is already cut, measure to the top of the opening including the finished floor. If it isn’t cut yet, account for rafter height, subfloor thickness (typically 3/4″ plywood), and your finished floor material.
Well opening
For standard through-the-floor installations, your finished well opening must be 2″ larger overall than the diameter of the stair. This is a finished measurement, meaning you should factor in any wood, drywall, or trim used to complete the opening.
Loft installations
If your stair opens into a loft rather than through the floor, well opening measurements don’t apply. Confirm that the full stair diameter fits the installation footprint. Marking it out on the floor with masking tape before ordering is a simple way to verify.
Outdoor installations
Most metal spiral kits can be adapted for outdoor use by replacing standard hardware with stainless steel and finishing with two coats of rust-inhibiting, oil-based enamel. For waterfront environments, aluminum kits are recommended. The Victorian Spiral series kit is well-suited to outdoor applications. Carpenter Spiral series kits and other wood kits are not suitable for outdoor use.
Building codes
Requirements vary by municipality. Some jurisdictions follow the International Building Code (IBC) or International Residential Code (IRC); others have their own interpretations or none that apply to spiral staircases. We offer kits to meet all standard code requirements. Your design consultant can help ensure your configuration is code-compliant. We recommend checking with your local building inspector before ordering.
Most custom stair kits can be installed by two do-it-yourselfers without a contractor. Metal and Victorian Spiral series kits typically take one full day. Carpenter Spiral series and CODE metal spiral kits take approximately two days.
We recommend consulting a contractor for cutting and framing the floor opening, and for rerouting any pipes or electrical lines.
Before you begin, read the full installation manual. For metal spiral and Carpenter Spiral series kits, watch the installation video. Both are available in the Installation Library.
Tools you’ll need:

Finishing your stair:
Paint after assembly to avoid scratching treads during installation. Metal spiral and Victorian Spiral series kits require oil-based enamel — do not use latex. Outdoor stairs should include a rust-inhibiting additive. Carpenter Spiral series kits require two coats of polyurethane within one week of installation.
If you lose your manual, all manuals are available as downloadable PDFs in the Installation Library.
